HOUSTON October 11, 2018
Vanderbloemen Search Group, a retained executive search firm based in Houston, has named Sutton Turner as its Chief Operating Officer (COO). Sutton Turner brings a combined 23 years of business and ministry experience to his role as COO at Vanderbloemen.
“We have been fortunate to have seen many years of repeated and robust growth, and our work is at an unprecedented size and scope. Now the question for Vanderbloemen isn’t just growth, but how we scale as growth hits a new gear. Sutton is just the right person to help us take our systems and processes to an even better level of excellence,” William Vanderbloemen, Founder and CEO of Vanderbloemen Search Group, said. “The combination of his extensive business expertise and direct experience working in the church give him, and Vanderbloemen, a unique alchemy for a great future. I’m grateful he’s here and more optimistic than ever about our future.”
Prior to joining Vanderbloemen, Sutton led five different businesses across three different countries (United States, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi) as CEO, starting three of those from scratch and growing them to large, sustainable companies. Sutton also has significant ministry experience. He joined the staff of Mars Hill Church in Seattle in 2011 as General Manager before being promoted to Executive Pastor, Executive Elder, and Board Member. When Sutton arrived, Mars Hill had a weekly attendance of 8,500 over nine sites. During his time there, the church grew to a peak attendance of 15,000 across five states and 15 locations. Mars Hill also had a weekly podcast audience of over 250,000. Sutton also served Celebration Church in Georgetown, Texas, as Executive Director from 2006 – 2008.
“I am excited about this opportunity to see Vanderbloemen grow in serving more churches as well as expanding our presence into new areas of values-based organizations,” Sutton said. “We have an amazing and talented team ready to go to the next level.”
Vanderbloemen Search Group has served over 800 clients since its founding in 2010, has grown to nearly 40 full-time employees and has won several company culture awards. In 2016 and 2017, the firm ranked in the top five in Entrepreneur.com’s Top Company Cultures list of all small businesses in the United States. In 2015, 2016, and 2017, Houston Business Journal named the firm a ‘Best Place To Work in Houston.’ In 2017, Houstonia Magazine named Vanderbloemen a ‘Best Place To Work in Houston,’ and Entrepreneur.com named Vanderbloemen one of The Best Entrepreneurial Companies in America. The firm was also named #25 on Forbes’ list of America’s Top Executive Recruiting Firms in 2017 as well as named a Forbes Small Giant in 2018, recognizing companies that favor greatness over growth.
Their clients come from over 50 different denominations or types of churches, as well as Christian non-profits and relief organizations. The firm represents churches ranging in attendance from 30 to over 70,000. Churches and values-based organizations such as Life.Church, Mariners Church, Central Christian Church, Leadership Network, Ramsey Solutions, St. John XXIII College Preparatory School, and Caring Network Illinois (formerly CareNet of Dupage) are representative of those who choose to retain Vanderbloemen to help find key staff.
While Vanderbloemen can staff any position at any size church, the bulk of the firm’s work is made up of searches for senior level staff. Searches involving Senior Pastor succession are an area of particular expertise. In addition to search work, the firm also provides services in staff consulting, succession planning, organizational culture, and compensation analysis.
