After accruing many years of professional experience, Dr. Howell retired as a materials engineer with the Naval Surface Warfare Center, a position that was among the highlights of her career. Earlier in her career, she served as an assistant professor for Kansas State Teachers College (later called Kansas State College of Emporia and now Emporia State University). Following these appointments, Dr. Howell also contributed as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Missouri in Rolla where she attempted to prepare “polywater.” She concluded that it did not exist. She was also a research chemist for the National Institute of Standards and Technology. She worked in the Clinical Chemistry Program, which develops medical substances for standard reference materials. Following this, Dr. Howell worked in the polymers division of NIST.
An expert in her field, Dr. Howell has earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Science from Kansas State University and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Missouri. She held the post of a councilor from 1983 until 1997.After her retirement in 1997. Howell has further found success as a commissioner of the town of Melbourne Village.
For her excellence in the field, Dr. Howell has been presented with the Gordon Award from the Chemical Society. Likewise, she has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women. Looking toward the future, Dr. Howell intends to continue enjoying her retirement.
