A renowned educator in the field, Dr. de Casal has been active as a Professor of leadership, law, labor relations and policy for Executive Leaders at Tennessee State University in Nashville since 2008. She also spent time as the Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership with the university. Prior to these roles, she cultivated her expertise through a number of positions with the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, including as the Associate Dean of Internal Operations, the Director of International Programs, the Director of Accreditation, the Director of Teacher Education and a Professor of Leadership. Earlier in her career, Dr. de Casal was involved with the University of Southern Mississippi as the Assistant Dean, Director of Accreditation and Strategic Planning, Director of Teacher Education, and in the role of Department Chair at Winthrop University in South Carolina.
Along with her primary responsibilities, Dr. de Casal has contributed her skills to a number of other professional endeavors. Previously the State Monitor for Molly Hootch Consent Decree compliance at the Alaska Department of Education, she was also the State Director of Civil Rights and Special Population Programs. Additionally, she has served as the Executive Director of a disability association and a disability specialist at a law firm in Austin, Texas. A regular contributor of articles to professional journals and monographs, Dr. de Casal is also the author of numerous book chapters and is a frequent national and international speaker, author and consultant.
Having achieved much over the course of her career, Dr. de Casal is proud to have had the privilege to work with the Inuit, Yupik, and First Nations peoples in Alaska. A life-changing experience, while the terrain and temperatures were difficult at times, she would not trade what she learned and experienced for the world. Another gratifying professional time was when she had the opportunity to negotiate, build and serve as Director for a K-16 residential English language school in South Korea. She interviewed teachers from around the world and designed curricula for all areas of the school programs. Dr. de Casal has no regrets about the path her career has taken, as she has been able to travel the world and share the warmth and wonderment of these adventures with her students.
Knowing that she wanted to be a teacher from an early age, Dr. de Casal pursued an education at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in 1971, a Master of Education in 1978 and a Doctor of Education in 1980. Continuing to learn throughout her career, in 2007 she obtained an MBA in International Business from Novus University in California. Holding teaching certification in elementary and secondary education, she also holds teaching credential in Spanish grades 9-12, K-12, English, bilingual and English as a second language, special education, reading, language arts, in four areas of Educational Leadership, and Community College Administration as well. Dr. de Casal has earned additional credentials as an administrative hearing officer, a mediator, a paralegal, a federal and state tax accountant, a gemologist, an international tour manager and tour guide, and in International TEFL/TESOL/TESL teaching.
Recognized by UCEA, the premier national association for Educational Leadership, with the most prestigious awards, Dr. de Casal received the Jack Culbertson Award for outstanding research and teaching while at the University of Texas at Austin. She was also recognized as a Woman of Distinction in Education in 2016, and named National Professional Woman of the Year in Higher Education by the National Association of Professional Women in 2012. In 2001, she was honored with a Distinguished Educator Award from the Tennessee Department of Education and served on the national CAEP Accreditation Appeals Board for several years. She has also received the Service Award from the Education Law Association from 1997 to 2000, and was named Woman Excelling in Leadership by the Texas Council of Women School Executives in 1990, among other accolades. In light of the totality of her accomplishments, Dr. de Casal has previously been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and World Who's Who of Women.
