Believing in the importance of history, Dr. Klotter has focused his professional life on that field. He began his career as an assistant editor at the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort in 1973 and over the next 17 years advanced to editor and assistant director. He was also heavily involved with the Kentucky Mansions Preservation Foundation and the Kentucky Civil War Roundtable, where he acted as the secretary from 1984 to 1994 and the president from 1994 to 2007. During his illustrious career, Dr. Klotter authored and co-authored 20 books, such as “William Goebel: Politics of Wrath,” “A New History of Kentucky” and “Henry Clay: The Man Who Would Be President,” which was published in 2018.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Klotter pursued formal education at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1968, a Master of Arts in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1975. Later on in his career, he received two Doctor of Letters degrees from Eastern Kentucky University and Union College in Kentucky in 1997 and 1998, respectively. While attending to his studies, he briefly served in the United States Army between 1970 and 1971. In addition, Dr. Klotter has remained current with developments in his field through affiliations with the Southern Historical Association, the Kentucky Association of Teachers of History and the Kentucky Council on Archives.
Among his career highlights, Dr. Klotter notes the many students he has taught, his books, an article in the Journal of American History, and his role in the building of the Kentucky History Center in Frankfort. Married to Freda for over a half century, they have three children and seven grandchildren. In retirement, he continues his work in history, while also enjoying travel and time with family.
