Prior to this appointment, he held the position of partner for Lieff, Cabraser, Heimann & Bernstein, LLP from 1991 to 2006. Previously, he served as an associate for Morrison & Foerster LLP from 1987 to 1990 and Feldman, Waldman and Kline from 1984 to 1987. Mr. Finberg began his career as a law clerk to the Honorable Charles Levin of the Michigan Supreme Court from 1983 to 1984.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Finberg pursued an education at Brown University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1980. He concluded his studies in 1983 at the University of Chicago Law School, graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence. He served as the executive editor for the University of Chicago Law Review from 1982 to 1983. Following these accomplishments, Mr. Finberg was admitted to practice law by the State Bar of California, the United States District Courts for the Central, Eastern, Northern and Southern Districts of California, the District of Hawaii, the District of Colorado, the Southern District of Texas, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Ninth, Third, Second, Tenth, Eleventh, and Federal Circuits, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Finberg has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has contributed to the Legal Aid Society at Work as a secretary since 2014, on the executive committee since 2010, and a board member since 2006. He has held the roles of adjunct law professor at the University of California Hastings College of the Law in 2008, co-chair of the delegation of lawyer representatives from the Northern District of California to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference from 2000 to 2001, and former advisory committee member for Local Rules for Securities Cases for the United States District Courts in California in 1996.
In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Finberg remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He served on the Board of Directors for the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area from 1992 to 1998 and from 2008 to 2013, serving as co-chair from 1997 to 1998 and from 2008 to 2010, the National Employment Lawyers Association from 2010 to 2013, the Bar Association of San Francisco from 1999 to 2000, and the Northern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union in 1995. He was also active with The Bar Association of San Francisco as president in 2005, president-elect in 2004, treasurer in 2003, secretary in 2002, and the judicial evaluation committee in 1994.
Mr. Finberg additionally excelled with the American Bar Association as plaintiff's program chair for the Equal Employment Opportunity Committee from 1999 to 2001, chairman of the Securities Subcommittee of the Litigation Section from 1998 to 2006, and on the Derivative Action Committee of the Litigation Section from 1998 to 2006. From 2008 to 2010, he was on the visiting committee for University of Chicago Law School. He has held posts with the State Bar of California as well, such as vice chairman from 1993 to 1994 and on the standing committee on legal services to the poor from 1990 to 1994. Mr. Finberg is a member of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.
Mr. Finberg was recognized as Lawyer of the Year for San Francisco Litigation in Labor and Employment by Best Lawyers in America in 2014 as well as California Lawyer of the Year in Civil Rights by California Lawyer in 2009. Previously, he has been honored among the Top 100 Lawyers in California by California Lawyer in 2006, the Top 100 Lawyers in the San Francisco Bay Area by Super Lawyers from 2005 to 2013, the Best Lawyers in America from 2005 to 2018, and the Northern California Super Lawyers from 2004 to 2018. In 2018, he was listed by the Daily Journal as one of the Top Labor and Employment Lawyers in California and in the Lawdragon 500 Leading Plaintiff Employment Lawyers. A fellow of the American Bar Foundation, he was selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in the World.
