Prior to the start of her career, she pursued a formal education at Belmont University in Nashville, earning an Associate of Science in nursing during 1980. Soon thereafter, she received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee, in 1983. As she continued her academic efforts, she secured a Master of Science in nursing from the School of Nursing at Vanderbilt University in Nashville in 1993. Dr. Hanna concluded her studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in healthcare administration from Warren National University in Thousand Oaks, California, in 2004.

Dr. Hanna commenced her career as a critical care nurse at the Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis from 1980 to 1985, further progressing to a critical care nurse at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center between 1985 and 1994. Subsequently, she accepted the position of manager at the American Transitional Hospital in Nashville from 1995 to 1999, further working as the director of education for the TriStar Centennial Medical Center from 1999 to 2016. Dr. Hanna was briefly associated with the Southern Hills Medical Center as a staff development manager from 2016 to 2018, and has contributed as a facility educator for HCA TriStar Division since 2018.

In a career filled with achievements, Dr. Hanna is proud to have developed and piloted standardized patient safety programs between healthcare organizations and schools of nursing throughout 2014. During her time with TriStar Centennial Medical Center, she was responsible for increasing the number of staff members trained in advanced cardiac life support, basic life support and pediatric advanced life support. Dr. Hanna also worked to improve the experience of clinical participants, reduce the academic-practice gap and improve marketability for employment.

As a testament to her success in the field, she has been the recipient of numerous honors and accolades. Some to her credit include the NNSDO Excellence in the Roles of the Professional Development Facilitator, Change Agent, and Consultant Award, the HCA Innovator's Award, and the Vision of Nursing Award from The Tennessean. An exceptionally distinguished Marquis listee, Dr. Hanna has been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Among Human Service Professionals, Who's Who in American Nursing, Who's in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of American Women.
