A native of Wolverhampton, England, Dr. Molton initially pursued an education at the University of Manchester, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1964. He continued his studies with a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry in 1967 and Master of Philosophy in microbiology in 1971 at the University of London. Soon thereafter, Dr. Molton earned a diploma in space physics from the University of London.

At the inception of his career, Dr. Molton served as a National Academy of Sciences postdoctoral fellow for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Moffett Field, CA, in 1971, holding the role for one year. Following this appointment, he worked as a research associate at the University of Maryland at College Park for the following two years before excelling as a senior research scientist at the Battelle Northwest Laboratory in Richland, WA, from 1975 until his retirement in 2005. During his tenure, Dr. Molton contributed his research to myriad articles published in professional journals regarding extraterrestrial life chemistry and invented a sludge to oil reactor system.

Dr. Molton was a fellow of the British Interplanetary Society, as well as a member of the American Chemical Society, the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life, and Alpha Chi Sigma. In 1988, he was presented with an Excellence in Technology Transfer Award from the Federal Laboratory Consortium and a Research and Development 100 Award from Research and Development Magazine. Additionally, he was featured in the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the West. However, the highlight of Dr. Molton's career was when he was cited on the Internet as an individual who has provided science with the definition of life.

The proud father of three children and grandfather of five grandchildren, Dr. Molton immigrated to the United States in 1971. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, camping and teaching. He also holds patents in his field. Looking toward the future, Dr. Molton intends to continue enjoying his retirement.
