“Once More, with Feeling”: a thoughtful narrative of childhood. “Once More, with Feeling” is the creation of published author Sara Higginbotham, a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who grew up in West Virginia and has worked variously as a banker, clerical worker, administrative assistant, typesetter, and Sunday school teacher.

Higginbotham shares, “The paper dolls were a problem. I would tediously cut them all out—making certain the job was one of perfection. I saved each outfit with the cardboard dolls in magazines, and I was truly organized about it. Pretty good way to care for them, I thought. But whenever Mother would decide to hit the cleaning with a flourish, she would unmindfully pick up my magazines, and my treasures would fly everywhere.
‘Why can’t you keep those things in a box? Look at that mess. Young lady, you get busy and pick up every piece.’
Shit. I was in trouble again.
Speaking of my language, if Granny heard my favorite bad word, she would remind me, ‘You have in your mouth what I wouldn’t have on my hands.’ The image cured me for at least a time until another situation demanded its use.
Granny was a devout Christian lady and tried hard to pass on her best advice to me, including unacceptable language. But, she had a special vocabulary all her own.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Sara Higginbotham’s new book is a nostalgic dive into a time when children enjoyed freedoms that no longer exist.

Whether the reader can personally recall such a time with enthusiasm, or can visit such an era through their imagination, Higginbotham acts as a gracious host inviting the reader to her West Virginia hometown and all the unforgettable places and characters who had left an impression on her—and on her young character Abbie.
