During his career at the University, he also served as a consultant for the Department of Pharmacology at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center at Brooklyn, between 1987 and 1992, visiting scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory at Upton, between 1985 and 1990, visiting professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, between 1989 and 1993. He formerly served as a research associate, assistant professor, associate professor and professor at the Shanghai Institute of Physiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, between 1950 and 1989.
Renowned for his work, Mr. Fan was notably responsible for achieving experimental evidence of non-excitability of the apical dendrites of pyramidal neurons in mammalian brain; discover of the role of non-specific projection system of thalamus in the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex; discoverer of shrimp (penaeus) giant nerve fiber had the highest conduction velocity in the animal kingdom and reveal of its mechanism; experimental evidence that in certain invertebrate striated muscle, besides sliding filament mechanism, thick filament shortening also plays a role in muscle contraction; first isolation of sub-filament from the thick myofilament of striated muscle; reveal the mechanism of the curative effect on cardiac diseases of the active principles of several Chinese medicinal herbs, e.g., cycloviroboxin; first detection and study the cross-bridge motion of striated muscle without intervention of labeling molecule; discover the excitation-contraction coupling mechanism in certain invertebrate striated muscle, besides that via Ca2+-troponin system, also possesses a Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent system; first record the activity of in situ single gap junction channel; measure the change of flexibility of thick myofilament following activation; concentration-dependent modulation of ionic currents in neurons by opioid receptor agonists; modulation of ionic currents in retina by cannabinoid receptor agonist; discover an electrogenic hyperpolarization elicit chloride transport current in vertebrate retinal cone.
For excellence in his career, Mr. Fan has been honored with several science prizes from the Shanghai Institute of Physiology, the Chinese Ministry of Health and the Chinese Academy of Sciences between 1956 and 1986. Also recognized for his scientific achievements by Shanxi province in China in 1979, he was selected for inclusion in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Mr. Fan has held a degree in physics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 1950.
Born in Shanghai in 1929, Mr. Fan followed in the footsteps of his parents by attending college. Both of his parents received their degrees at the University of Chicago in 1928 before returning to China to teach. He later relocated to the United States in 1980 after working for the Chinese Academy of Sciences for over 30 years. Married to his wife, Chen-Yu Yang, since 1962, he is the proud father of one child. In retirement, Mr. Fan enjoys many hobbies, especially playing the piano.
